The Grover Museum will be opening a new exhibit this spring, “May Fest, A Shelbyville Tradition,” and is calling on the community to round out the exhibit. In 1924, Shelbyville Senior High School celebrated the graduating class by holding an event called May Fest on the first Thursday in May. The May Court, elected by the senior class, along with the Lord Mayor, the highest ranking male student, were honored with traditional dances from underclassmen. These traditional dances included the candle, May pole and arch dances, and were accompanied by musical performances. The event has changed in many ways since its inception, but has remained a unique tradition that honors the talents of the student body at its core.
The museum’s exhibit will highlight the pageantry of the annual event through pictures, vintage dresses worn by members of the past May Courts and more. To fill this exhibit, museum staff are seeking loans from the community, particularly of items pre-2010. Although not a requirement for being a part of the exhibit, the museum staff are also seeking $30 donations for preservation and display costs. A donation of any amount would be greatly appreciated.
